Collings-MF5-mandolin-fretboard-extension-740x493Beginning Mandolin Workshop 12:30-2:30pm This class is for everyone from rank beginners to more intermediate players who may have hit a slump and feel the need to slow down and work on relaxation and technique. The inspiration for my beginning classes comes from the idea that keeping your mind relaxed, spacious and receptive is the key.  Always. The more you think you know, the less you can learn.  “In the beginner’s mind there are many possibilities, but in the expert’s there are few.” – Shunryu Suzuki Roshi.  We will go into the foundations of right and left hand technique in great detail and have fun exploring daily exercises to encourage easy and efficient picking.

FOLLOWED BY:::: New Directions for Mandolin 3-5pm In this class, we will be exploring some direct and simple ways to expand your sense of more involved rhythms, improvisation and chord knowledge.  The mandolin world is now fearlessly embracing music from all over the world: Brazilian, Celtic, Gypsy Jazz and so much more.  If you have an interest in going beyond basic folk and bluegrass, it can be a bit overwhelming.  My goal is to focus on some fun strategies and tricks to work with both syncopated rhythms and all those stylistic nuances that make “other” music so interesting.  I’m keeping the class small enough so that I can address any specific interests and requests you may have.  Bring a pick and a mandolin. Previous experience with basic chords and rhythms is helpful but not required. TABOR SPACE: 5441 SE Belmont St, Portland, OR 97215 – 505-238-3904 $40 for one workshop.  $75 for both.
